Exploring Your Digital Footprint

Finding yourself has a whole new meaning!

For most, a digital footprint is an abstract concept, full of dos and don'ts about leaving traces of your presence online. In this workshop, you actually see your footprint by using a number of searching techniques that help you "find yourself."

Participants construct an idea about how they are represented online and then evaluate what they find from the perspective of a professional third party, like an employer or a member of a university admission committee. Looking at their findings from the perspective of a parent or potential prom date is also very interesting. Also addressed is how to keep tabs on how you are appearing on the Web, and how to manage your presence by creating a positive digital footprint.

Who: This is suitable for age 13 (because that is, after all, the age one needs to be to get a Facebook account) and up, and is for any teacher regardless of technical skill level, from novice to geek.

Time and materials: Typically 60-90 minutes works best. Participants will need an Internet-connected laptop (smart phone, iPad, or whatever they like to use), as well as access to their Facebook accounts.
