Change, and paradigm shift—what do they mean? The dictionary definition of change in general is "alteration the exchange of one thing for another the passing of one form, phase, place or state to another." Paradigm is defined as a "pattern or model", so a paradigm shift is the substituting of one pattern or model for another.

However, what is the real life meaning of radical change and what happens when dramatic paradigm shifts take place? These concepts are explored and expressed in various ways in the following quotes and comments from both myself and others. In addition, a few specific examples of real world changes have been included that demonstrate just how radical change has been, and is likely to be in the future.

Consider carefully the following quotes, and embrace just how valuable and essential change is to the human condition.

Rapid change means chance, it means uncertainty. It means competition from the least expected quarter. It means big projects that collapse and small ones that stun one with their success. It means new technologies, new kinds of skills and workers, and wholly unprecedented economic conditions.
John Naisbitt

In a paradigm shift, you see things as you've never seen them before.
Joel Baker

The paradigm of automobiles or horseless carriages consists of grafting the old idea of carriages onto the new idea of making them operable without horses.
Ted McCain

Change is not a destination; it's an attitude, a state of mind, an act of faith.
Ian Jukes

In times of change, obsolescence is the order of the day.
Frank Ogden

Restructuring isn't a noun, it's a verb.
Ian Jukes
